NDA (National Defence Academy)
The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces,
where cadets of the three services - the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force - train together
before they go on to pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies.
About NDA
The NDA is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy
in the world and is considered one of the most prestigious institutions in the country.
Cadets are awarded a Baccalaureate degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science) after
3 years of study.
Eligibility Criteria
For Army Wing of NDA: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent.
For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education
or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
Age Limit
Only unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January 2005 and not later than
1st January 2008 are eligible to apply for the examination. The age criteria are strictly
enforced by the commission.
NDA Examination Pattern
The NDA examination consists of two papers - Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).
Both papers are conducted in offline mode (pen and paper).
Mathematics
- Total Marks: 300
- Duration: 2½ hours
- Questions: 120 (Multiple Choice)
- Syllabus: Algebra, Matrices, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability
General Ability Test (GAT)
- Total Marks: 600
- Duration: 2½ hours
- Questions: 150 (Multiple Choice)
- Part A: English (200 marks)
- Part B: General Knowledge (400 marks) - Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, Current Events
Selection Process
Step 1: Written Examination
Candidates must qualify in the written examination with minimum qualifying marks
as determined by the commission.
Step 2: SSB Interview
Qualified candidates are called for Services Selection Board (SSB) interview which
spans over 5 days and includes psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interview.
Step 3: Medical Examination
Candidates recommended by SSB undergo medical examination to ensure they meet the
physical and medical standards required for the Armed Forces.
Step 4: Final Merit List
Final merit list is prepared based on performance in written examination and SSB interview.
Selected candidates join NDA for training.
Training at NDA
The training at NDA is comprehensive and covers all aspects of military training along with
academic education. The training duration is 3 years divided into 6 terms.
Academic Training
Cadets pursue a 3-year degree course in Arts or Science stream with subjects like
Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, History, Political Science, Economics, etc.
Physical Training
Rigorous physical training including drills, physical exercises, swimming, horse riding,
and various sports to develop physical fitness and endurance.
Military Training
Training in weapons, field craft, tactics, map reading, leadership skills, and
service-specific training for Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Career Opportunities After NDA
After successful completion of training at NDA, cadets move to their respective service
academies for further training before being commissioned as officers in the Indian Armed Forces.
Indian Army
Cadets joining Army go to Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun for 1 year training
before being commissioned as Lieutenants.
Indian Navy
Naval cadets go to Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala for training before being
commissioned as Sub Lieutenants.
Indian Air Force
Air Force cadets go to Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal for training before being
commissioned as Flying Officers.
